Tough All Over
a film by Keith Brown

Remember singing along to pop songs without really knowing what the words meant? Remember playing Dodge Ball in gym class? Remember how terrifying it was to ask a girl to dance, especially if you “liked” her?

Sixth grade is “tough” for Nathan in 1986. After all, he’s dealing with his first crush, his first school dance, and the terrors of junior high gym class all in the same week. The dance is this Friday night and Nathan’s friends want him to go, although he’d rather stay home and watch Dallas. Nathan changes his mind when he finds out that Julie, the girl he “likes” is going to be at the dance.

Tough All Over is a journey back in time to our own adolescence when growing up was difficult, all the boys wore high top sneakers, and all the girls pegged their jeans. Similar to television’s Freaks and Geeks, Tough examines the trials and tribulations of a young boy growing up in the 80s, but during the awkward time of the early teenage years. Voices cracking, first crushes, and increased interaction with the opposite sex – these things are a little overwhelming at that age.
